Master 2 - English and North-American Business Law

University of Paris 1 - Panthéon-Sorbonne

Created in the mid-1970s by André Tunc (1917-1999), the Master 2 English and North American Business Law (formerly DEA English and North American Business Law) was successively led by Professors Xavier BLANC-JOUVAN, Horatia MUIR WATT, Pascal de VAREILLES-SOMMIERES and Sophie ROBIN-OLIVIER.

Through courses mainly taught in English, this master's degree pursues a triple vocation:

On the one hand, this training ensures young researchers access to the cultural, epistemological and methodological aspects of comparative law in the disciplinary field of business law (law of obligations, corporate law, intellectual property law, civil procedure, private international law, etc.) offering a particularly fertile ground for comparative reflection.

On the other hand, it encourages students to reflect on the impacts of economic globalization on the business law of civil systems, offering them the knowledge necessary to judge for themselves the progress - or myth - of the Americanization of law around the world at a time of growing concern over the competitiveness of civil law in the field of business law.

Finally, this Master’s degree provides training Common Law reasoning and solutions, which prepares students either for further studies (LL.M) in England or the United States, or for a career in an international law firm.

The courses are administered by a team of teachers from the Sorbonne School of Law and foreign universities using the Socratic teaching method. The program also offers an important introduction to other disciplines such as philosophy and legal epistemology as well as the history of law in Common Law countries. Finally, the program combines very practical Common Law courses as a foreign law, with teachings designed to give students the methodological tools needed to compare legal systems.

A word from the director

The Master's Degree in Anglo-American Business Law is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Established in the 1970s by André Tunc, it is now recognized as a program of excellence, highly attractive to students and well-regarded by law firms specializing in business law, both in France and internationally. This success is largely due to two key strengths of the program.

The first distinctive feature of the Master's program is its offering of a true immersion in common law legal systems, making it an ideal preparation for practicing law in connection with the Anglo-American world. The curriculum consists exclusively of courses in English and American law, taught in English by a faculty combining French academics and practitioners with recognized expertise in common law, as well as numerous guest professors from British and North American universities. Students not only become familiar with the legal techniques characteristic of Anglo-American law but also gain insight into the legal culture and mindset specific to common law countries.

The program's quality also stems from the diversity and complementarity of the skills it imparts to its students, extending beyond robust technical knowledge of Anglo-American business law. The program emphasizes essential practical skills for any legal professional, such as legal research, argumentation, and eloquence in both oral and written expression. In addition to courses on substantive law, more theoretical classes ensure that students master the requirements of comparative methodology, the sources of Anglo-American law, and the doctrinal debates that have shaped contemporary Anglo-American legal thought.

The Master's Degree in Anglo-American Business Law thus equips its graduates to join a community of globally minded legal professionals, well-prepared to tackle the challenges of globalization.
